In times of natural disasters and power outages, it’s hard for underserved communities to get the services they need, so the City of Orlando and The University of Central Florida are stepping in with mobile power hubs in a program called REACH.
REACH stands for Resilience, Education, and Advocacy Center for Hazard Preparedness, and will be self-sustaining through solar energy, batteries, and generators.
The plan is for these REACH hubs to provide pre- and post-disaster electricity and internet connectivity, as well as serve as a hands-on STEM education center during non-emergencies to help learn more about the needs of the public during times of need.
A team of researchers is finalizing the designs, which are inspired by the Tiny Green Home seen outside the Orlando Science Center.
The hope is to be able to start building in the next couple of months, with test runs in the fall.
