Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th because it marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved African Americans in the state were free.
This news, delivered nearly two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, signified the end of slavery in the United States.
