About Moonshine & Mistletoe

The Ballards, Lessy Boy and Curleen, welcome family and friends into their Appalachian mountain home to celebrate Christmas Day.

In the midst of the Great Depression, they have no gifts to exchange, but instead, they share their love of Appalachian hymns and carols.

Unexpectedly, the Ballard’s son who’d left the fold to escape a certain fate in the coal mines returns to make amends with his parents.

With him is his very-soon-to-be-a-mother wife. Though Curleen seems incapable of negotiating a peaceful reconciliation with her son, a Christmas miracle opens up a new possibility of forgiveness.

Moonshine & Mistletoe is a musical valentine to a bygone era and is a wholesome holiday theatrical event for the entire family.

The Cast

Written by DJ Salisbury and arranged by Larry Moore, the performance at the Garden Theatre will star Maggie Hollinbeck as the family’s mother, Curleen, and Luke Darnell as the son, Lessy Boy.

Cast in the roles of friends and family in this musical are Allison Kelly, John Rochette, David Finch, Amanda Giese, Kelan Smith, Kamilah Lay, Pedro Ka’awaloa, Julian James, and Megan Erin Lai.

“With the extraordinary David Lutken presiding as Music Director and Music Supervisor, the cast assembled to tell the story are actor-musicians of phenomenal talent and skill.” says Moonshine & Mistletoe writer, DJ Salisbury.

“Hailing from Chicago, New York City, Portland, and Orlando, most play multiple instruments, from dulcimer to accordion to Banjo. Among them is Julian James, a recent graduate of NYU who grew up performing in shows on the Garden Stage. The actor-musicians were selected from over 2,000 submissions received in a local and country-wide search.”
