Out and About: Howard Jones at Velvet Sessions at the Hard Rock Hotel Orlando

Last week, I took in this month’s edition of Velvet Sessions at the Hard Rock Hotel Orlando to see one of my favorite musicians of all time: Howard Jones.

The Velvet Sessions take place the last Thursday of the month (most months) in the intimate setting of the hotel’s lobby area. The seating is removed, bars are set up around the side and back from the stage, which occupies one wall.

With no opening act, Howard Jones took the stage slightly after 8pm with fellow keyboardist Robbie Bronnimann. Yes, only two men, but with Jones’ love of tech, those two made a whole band’s worth of sound.

The set list consisted of many fan favorites slightly reworked into new versions. “Things Can Only Get Better” turned into a fast-paced club tune towards the end, while “Like to Get to Know You Well” had a more pronounced reggae feel.

He also encouraged the crowd to sing-along, and we did, on songs like “What is Love?” and “No One Is to Blame.”

He performed a few songs from his recent release ENGAGE, which I was unfamiliar with but many in the crowd knew them well enough to sing along.

Over all it was a lovely show, and I ran into many friends there (even made a few new ones). Howard Jones live definitely delivers a fun concert filled with songs you know and love. Thanks to Jones for allowing me to cover the show.
