As a fan of Gloria Estefan’s music, I was excited to catch opening night of On Your Feet! The Emilio & Gloria Estefan Musical at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

The musical tells the story of her and husband Emilio’s rise to fame. While I was somewhat familiar with their lives, I had no idea how many struggles the duo has faced along the way.

From their lives in Cuba as children, to their meeting in Miami and beyond, On Your Feet! is as much an homage to their home country and family as it is to their careers.

On Your Feet! is also honest about struggles they had, especially when trying to cross over to the pop market. Pop radio labeled them as strictly Latin market, while Latin radio felt they were getting too pop. But the Estefans knew their music would be appreciated by everyone, so they made it happen.

The musical also touches on the tour bus accident in 1990 that left Gloria severely injured and having to relearn how to walk with two steel rods surgically inserted into her back.

On Your Feet! is a wonderful story of struggle and triumph, with a healthy dose of wit and humor, all set to the great music of Gloria and Emilio Estefan. I liked this show even more than i expected to.

The show plays at the Dr Phillip Center until Sunday, October 22, 2017. Tickets can be purchased online at drphillipscenter.org.
