Every night this week, at midnight, Universal Orlando is releasing teaser reveals of more houses for Halloween Horror Nights 23, on their Facebook page. The first one appears to be based on the legend of La Llorona.
The text that accompanies the artwork states: “Feel her pain and suffering as you succumb to her legend of tragedy… Enter the watery realm of La Llorona in this all-new haunted house, Urban Legends: La Llorona, at HHN23.”
There are several variations on the legend, but the basic story tells of a woman named Maria who drowns her children to be with the man she loves. She is devastated when he doesn’t want her and drowns herself.
At the gates of Heaven, she is refused entry because the souls of her children are not there. She is forced to wander the Earth until she finds them. Her constant weeping earned her the name “La Llorona.”
It will be interesting to see how Universal Orlando translates this urban legend into a haunted house/maze.
Urban Legends: La Llorona joins previously announced houses based on the movies Cabin in the Woods, Evil Dead, and the TV show The Walking Dead.
HHN23 runs select nights September 20 – November 2. To purchase tickets, or for more information, visit halloweenhorrornights.com/orlando.
