Out and About: Trader Joe’s Opens in Winter Park

Trader Joe's Winter Park grand opening day

It’s 7am on a Friday morning, and there are several hundred people waiting in line already for Central Florida’s first Trader Joe’s store to open in Winter Park. Store employees, called crew members, are making runs along the length of line, trying to drum up excitement with high-fives and loud “Whoo-hoos”.

The parking lot has been full and closed off by police since shortly after 6am, so shoppers have been parking in nearby lots, many at their own risk of being towed.

But there were a lot of people that were willing to bear with the long lines and dubious parking to be among the first to sample what Trader Joe’s has to offer foodies in the Orlando area.

Trader Joe’s Winter Park to Hold Grand Opening Celebration June 27

Trader Joe's Winter Park

The long-awaited Trader Joe’s will be opening its first Orlando area store on Friday, June 27, in Winter Park, and it plans a day full of events.

The store, located at 131 North Orlando Ave, will open at 8am with a ceremonial lei-cutting. Throughout the day, it will have live music, food demonstrations, and raffles to win prizes. The store will close its first day at 9pm.

Trader Joe’s has established a following among foodies nationwide with its selection of private-label products, many organic, made with quality ingredients, and free of preservatives and artificial food coloring. The cost for these items are also comparable to or less than similar items in other stores, such as Publix and Whole Foods Market.

If you plan to go opening weekend, be prepared for traffic both inside and outside the store. When a TJ’s store opened earlier this year in Tampa, over 100 people were lined-up before the store even opened.

Trader Joe’s Sets Opening Date for Winter Park Store

Trader Joe's Winter Park

Trader Joe’s will make its first foray into the Orlando area when it opens its Winter Park location at 8am on June 27, 2014.

For those not familiar with Trader Joe’s, it sells an extensive array of domestic and imported foods and beverages, such as artisan breads, Arabica bean coffees, international frozen entrées, 100% juices, fresh crop nuts, deli items, vitamins, and more, including organics, at lower prices than similar stores like Whole Foods. This is because it carries a lot of its own private label brands.

I have to say that I’ve shopped at Trader Joe’s when visiting the west coast, and I will love being able to grab items like cookie butter when the mood strikes.

Yes, I said cookie butter.

The store will be located in the Lakeside Winter Park development at 131 N. Orlando Ave. A second store is planned for Dr. Phillips on Sand Lake Rd, possibly opening later this year.

Trader Joe’s to Open First Orlando Location in Winter Park in 2014

traderjoesAfter months of speculation, it has been confirmed that specialty grocery chain Trader Joe’s will finally be opening an Orlando location in 2014.

The California-based company will be opening a store at the new Lakeside at Winter Park retail project located on U.S. Highway 17-92, just south of Winter Park Village.

Trader Joe’s has amassed quite a following due to a combination of store-brand goods that have no artificial colors or preservatives, and for purchasing directly from suppliers to keep the costs low. I always make a point to visit one of their stores when I’m in the L.A.-area because they have such cool and tasty stuff at a good price.

The new store will have competition nearby when it opens – there are two Publix within a half mile, as well as a Chamberlain’s health-food store in Winter Park Village and a new Fresh Market that will be opening 2 miles south.

According to the company, the new store will be typical of its other stores, and will serve beer and wine. No specific opening date has been announced yet.
