Patrick Stewart and Jewel Staite Among Those Beaming into Away Mission: Orlando this Weekend

Ok fellow sci-fi geeks. Halloween weekend usually belongs to the horror fans, but there’s a great event happening in Orlando that has nothing to do with monsters but does include aliens and other worldly life forms. Or at least the actors that play them.

I’m talking about Vulcan Events’ Away Mission: Orlando sci-fi fan convention. It takes place October 28 through 30 at the Hilton Walt Disney World.

Headlining the event is Sir Patrick Stewart. Among his many legendary roles on stage and screen are those of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men movies. I adore him.

Also headlining is actress Jewel Staite, who portrayed Kaylee in the Firefly series, and its companion movie, Serenity. She also starred as Dr. Jennifer Keller in Syfy’s Stargate: Atlantis series. I’ve met her at a few Firefly events and she’s awesome!

Others celebrity media guests scheduled for the event are Armin Shimerman (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; Buffy the Vampire Slayer), David Warner (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Tron), David Nykl (Stargate Atlantis), Max Grodenchik (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Phil Morris (Star Trek; Mission: Impossible), Richard Hatch (Battlestar Galactica), and Jennifer Hetrick (Star Trek:The Next Generation).

All-inclusive tickets are sold out, but you can still get general admission day tickets for $20-$45, and select weekend passes starting at $69. Children 12 and under are free with a paid adult admission. Photos with and autographs are an additional fee per guest.

MegaConvention to Bring Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Comic Superstars to Orlando in March

If you’re a fan of science fiction or fantasy entertainment, then one annual Orlando event you won’t want to miss is MegaConvention. It brings in dozens of stars from film and TV, along with comic, anime and graphic artists/writers for a whole weekend to meet with fans and participate in panels.

The 2011 MegaConvention takes place March 25 to 27 at the Orange County Convention Center.

Among the media guests invited are a slew of Star Trek actors, including Capt. Kirk himself, William Shatner, along with Michael Dorn, Robin Curtis, Jonathan Frakes, and Marina Sirtis.

Also appearing are Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Gil Gerard, Erin Gray, Lou Ferrigno, John Schneider, Doug Jones (Hellboy I & II), Matt Senreich (Robot Chicken), Cindy Morgan (Tron), Kevin Sorbo and James Masters. There’s also a trio of original Battlestar Galactica actors: Herbert Jefferson, Jr.; Anne Lockhart; and Jack Stauffer.

As for the comic guests, the list is led off by the legendary Stan Lee, who will appear along with over 55 other well-known artists and writers.

A complete list of all appearing guests can be found at the MegaConvention website.

Entrance to the MegaConvention is $23.96 per day in advance or $25 at the door. A three-day pass is $56.45 in advance or $60 at the door. Children 10 and under are free with a paid adult admission.

Autographs, photo ops with the headlining guests and special events with the stars are additional to the admission price.

Tickets may be purchased online or in person at any Coliseum of Comics location, as well as Comic Central in Sanford.
