National Beer Day is tomorrow, April 7, and there are a variety of events and local breweries to enjoy a brew or two (or more).
This date was designated National Beer Day because on his day in 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt took the first step toward ending Prohibition and signed a law that allowed people to brew and sell beer as long as it remained below 4.0% alcohol by volume (ABV). Despite the low ABV, Americans were thrilled to be able to purchase beer for the first time in thirteen years.
Here are CitySurfing Orlando’s picks for celebrating this historical American day:
In this week’s Orlando dining news round-up: new openings and more. Are you hungry? Let’s dive in…
James and Julie Petrakis (The Ravenous Pig, Cask & Larder) dropped two newsworthy bits of information last week.
First they will be opening a new eatery next year at Disney Springs called the Polite Pig. They are partnering with James’ brother Brian (Greens & Grille) for this fast casual restaurant that will serve wood-fired smoked and grilled items – think sandwiches and salads – as well as a full drink menu that will include beer brewed at Cask & Larder.
This weekend, Orlando Brewing will host their 9th Annual Oktoberfest party on September 19, and it will be quite the festival.
It kicks off with a ceremonial tapping of Orlando Brewing’s 2015 märzenbier at 1pm. The day will continue with German food, the party polka sounds of Dan Witucki & Mein Heimatland Musikaten, general revelry, and of course, beer.
Orlando Brewing is kicking off summer with the release of a new brew, and a huge water-infused solstice celebration.
It kicks off at 1pm with the tapping of Steamee Summer, a Florida Common brew. It’s brewed with a lager yeast and a warm fermenting temperature of 60 degrees. “Warmer fermenting temperature makes for an effervescent beer,” explains Brewmaster Graeme Lay. “It’ll have more fruitiness than you’ll find in a typical lager, without as dry of a finish.”
It’s not quite fall, but pumpkin fans will be able to enjoy Orlando Brewing‘s Grateful Pumpkin Organic Spiced Ale, when it is tapped for the first time this year, on Saturday, August 24.
The ale was first brewed a year ago by Orlando Brewing, but this year, they’ve tweaked the recipe a bit. It’s brewed with organic cinnamon, ginger, allspice, pumpkin pie spice and a touch of pumpkin, along with Magnum and Fuggle hops.
It all starts at 1pm, with the tapping, followed by a Pumpkin Showdown (a baked-good contest) at 5pm, and a brewery tour at 5pm. There will also be live music from Crooken Road from 9pm to midnight.
Orlando Brewing is located at 1301 Atlanta Ave in Orlando.
