Out and About: Trying out Tony Roma’s New Fire Grill & Lounge

Tony Roma's Fire Grill & Lounge

Earlier this week, we were invited to join several other local bloggers to try out the new incarnation of Tony Roma’s, the new Tony Roma’s Fire Grill & Lounge on Lee Vista by the Orlando Airport.

Not only does it have a new, warmer, decor, but the menu is new, as well, emphasizing comfort foods and dishes grilled over a wood fire grill.

We were prepared to sample the delicious new offerings created by Bob Gallagher, Vice President of Culinary and Purchasing, but we had no idea at how amazing this new menu is.

The evening started with a few drinks while we were waiting for everyone to show up. We tried a Wood Aged Margarita and a Swindler, which was a very tasty mix of apple pie moonshine, Fireball whiskey, and housemade sour, with a cinnamon stick for garnish. It tasted like the filling of an apple pie – so yummy!

The Festival of Chocolate Returns to Orlando in April

Say the word chocolate and most everybody with a taste bud will suddenly pay attention.

And now that I have yours, I’d like to inform you that this year’s installment of the popular Festival of Chocolate event will take place the weekend of April 27 through 29, 2012.

Last year it was held at the Orlando Science Center, but this year it’s being held across town at the UCF Arena. This is good, as hopefully it’ll invite more vendors to participate.

In addition to tasty chocolate creations to purchase, there will bedemonstrations by world renowned pastry chefs, a Cocoa Coutoure Fashion Show, chocolate and wine pairings, hands-on classes, a one-of-a-kind chocolate museum, Kids-4-Chocolate workshop, crazy chocolate contests for adults and children, the chocolate game show stage, and live professional competitions.

Daily ticket prices are $15 for adults and $9 for kids. The event runs 4-10pm on Friday; 10am-6pm on Saturday; and 10am-5pm on Sunday.

For tickets, class registration and schedule of events, visit festivalofchocolate.com.

Not Your Normal Santa Sculpture at WDW Swan and Dolphin

I’ve seen snow Santas and sand Santas but the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin hotel has a Santa sculpture I’ve never seen before – a life-size chocolate Santa.

The entire display, complete with armchair, fireplace and Christmas tree, is made from 1,200 pounds of chocolate.

According to the hotel, their world-champion executive pastry chef, Laurent Branlard, used 880 pounds of dark chocolate, 132 pounds of milk chocolate, 154 pounds of white chocolate and 120 pounds of cocoa butter.

They also say this amazing creation contains almost 3,000,000 calories. Something tells me Weight Watchers would not approve.

Not sure what they’re going to do with the sculpture when the holidays are over, but I sure hope they have the air conditioning cranked up to prevent it from melting in the meantime.
