Out and About: The Odyssey at Orlando Shakespeare Theater on March 10, 2013

orlandoshakes-odysseytixThis weekend, my friend Patti and I took in a performance of The Odyssey at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Adapted from the classic Greek myth by Homer, acclaimed solo artist Charlie Bethel re-imagines the story in a more accessible way for everyone to enjoy, while remaining faithful to the original poem.

It’s a one-man show, where Bethel chronicles the adventures and misfortunes of Odysseus, a hero from the historic battle of Troy, as he tries to make his way home to his kingdom of Ithaca, Greece.

Using props, voices and mannerisms, Bethel not only narrates the story, but inhabits the characters, bringing them to life. He also imbues the production with a very healthy dose of humor.

The audience was a wide variety of ages, and everyone I spoke to also enjoyed the show. It ran about 90 minutes, plus there was an intermission about an hour in.

If you want to check out The Odyssey for yourself, remaining shows are Thursday through Sunday of this week, with the last show on March 17.

All seats are only $22, and may be purchased online or at the box office.

Orlando Shakespeare Theater is at 812 E. Rollins St., next to Loch Haven Park. For more information, call 407-447-1700 or visit orlandoshakes.org.

Thanks to the Orlando Shakespeare Theater for inviting us to this performance.
