Aviation fans will want to check out this year’s SUN ‘n FUN when it returns to Linder Airport in Lakeland April 21-26.
Throughout the week, there will be impressive airshows during the day from the likes of the Breitling Jet Team from France (April 21, 24, & 25) and the USAF Thunderbirds (April 25 & 26). There will also be night airshows on April 22 and 25 (this date includes fireworks).
On Sunday December 14th, Colonel Joe Kittinger (USAF Retired) held a dedication ceremony for an F-4 Phantom II fighter jet at the park named for him in Orlando at the Orlando Executive Airport.
The F-4 is the same aircraft Colonel Kittinger flew in many missions as an Air Force pilot and is the plane he was shot down in over Vietnam. Kittinger was a POW in the prison camp known as the “Hanoi Hilton” and nowadays at the age of 86 still stays actively involved in the Orlando community.
This past week (April 1-6) was the 40th Annual Sun ‘n Fun 2014 Airshow. It’s said to be like Spring Break for pilots, and it is, with lots of workshops and vendors with lots of gadgets for airplanes, helicopters and the like.
On the weekend is the airshow. This is always a fun event and very family friendly. Yes, it’s usually hot and humid, but always fun. This weekend was hot, but not as humid as it’s been in past years. This is an affordable event as kids under 10 get in free with a paid adult. So for a family of four, it’s doable. They did allow small coolers so you could bring your own water, which is very nice. This event is a bring your own chairs or blanket to sit on and set up your spot on the flight line in the grass to save your place. This is in a field, so be sure to bring bug spray along with your sunscreen.
April 1st was not only April Fool’s Day, but was also opening day! No, not baseball – I’m talking about the opening day for the Sun ‘n Fun airshow at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland, FL.
For those of us that are addicted to the beauty and thrill of flying, this is one of the best airshows in the country. You baseball fans can keep your peanuts, popcorn and cracker jacks – I’ll stick with the sound of spinning props, the roar of jet engines, and the smell of gas and jet fuel, thank you very much!
This year they are celebrating the airshow’s 40th anniversary, which seems to grow larger every year. There is so much to see that it is almost impossible to see everything at the show in a single day. From the old faithful warbirds to the latest experimental and homebuilt planes – even flying cars are on exhibit! There is literally something for anyone even remotely interested in aviation or even thrill-seeking spectators. There are exhibits spread throughout the airfield, with everything from spare parts for vintage airplanes to electronic navigation aids, flight simulators, and so much more.
If you have any interest in aviation, then you’ll want to attend the 40th Annual SUN ‘n FUN International Fly-In & Expo at the Linder Airport in Lakeland from April 1-6.
You’ll want to get there early in the morning for the daily skydivers arriving with the U.S. flag, then each afternoon, there will be exhibitions of both military and civilian aircraft, as well as airshows to thrill everyone. In the evenings, there will be live entertainment, and a nightly aviation or space themed movie.
The weekend gets even more exciting with performances by the US Navy Blue Angels on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons, and a car and motorcycle show on Saturday and Sunday.
There will also be a hot air balloon launch Saturday morning, and a special night airshow and fireworks that evening at dusk.
All week long, there will be plenty of opportunities to see rare planes, and there will also be a Kids Zone with a pay-per-use fun zone of inflatables, zip line, and more.
