Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2020

The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 20, 2020, marks the 25th anniversary of the day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy.

In Central Florida, several events are planned to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and we have the schedule here:

JANUARY 16

Orlando: Florida A&M University of College Law – Annual MLK Leadership Forum
Presented by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. The event theme is “A conversation and dialogue: is Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream still alive?” The conversation will focus on the wealth gap, business development, affordable housing and educational opportunities.

JANUARY 17

Orlando: First Baptist Church of Orlando – 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Luncheon
Cost: $60 and up
This celebration and lunch is presented by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and will feature Harold Mills of VMD Ventures as the event speaker. Drum Major Awards for scholarship, civic affairs, social justice, community service and business.

Orlando: Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Institutional – 2020 City of Hope
A performance of local cultural arts promoting unity and reflecting diversity.

JANUARY 18

Eatonville: Downtown – 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade Celebration
The 2020 celebration’s theme is “Unity in the Community.” Enjoy food, vendors, music and entertainment from dance and step teams.

Kissimmee: Downtown – 2020 MLK Unity Parade
The City of Kissimmee’s MLK Parade runs through Historic Downtown Kissimmee starting at 10am.

Kissimmee: Kissimmee Lakefront Park – City of Kissimmee Unity Festival
From 11am-4pm the festival will include live entertainment, music and performers, a kids zone, food and merchandise.

Lakeland: Martin Luther King Jr. Ave – Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Annual Community Parade
Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. with a parade down the street named after him starting at 10am.

Orlando: Downtown – 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade
The theme for the 2020 parade is “King 2020, The Beloved Community: The Fierce Urgency of Now.” Get there early if you want a good spot to watch; it starts at 10am.

Orlando: First United Methodist Church of Orlando – 2020 MLK Concert: A Gospel Concert Celebration
Presented by the Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission and featuring The Aeolians of Oakwood University. The concert celebrates 34 years of the King Holiday in songs and performances. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to stock community pantries.

Orlando: Palmer Feed Store – MLK South Street Jazz and Blues
A day of family fun, entertainment, live music and food to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

JANUARY 19

Winter Park: Knowles Chapel at Rollins College – MLK Speeches Read-In
Join Religious & Spiritual Life for an evening of inspiration as various members of the Rollins Community celebrate the legacy of The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King via speech and song. This service will incorporate various aspects of his speeches with soul stirring music woven in.

JANUARY 20

Clermont: Waterfront Park – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Celebration
The parade begins at 10am at McKinney Park, and ends at Waterfront Park for the celebration.

Lakeland: Strong Tower Church – MLK Day Block Party
Celebrating the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with free food, bounce houses, music, face painting, and more.

Ocoee: West Oaks Mall – MLK Day Parade and Celebration
Parade begins at Citrus Elementary School (87 North Clarke Road) and ends at the West Oaks Mall with a post parade celebration and keynote speaker.

Orlando: First Baptist Church of Orlando – 2020 Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Prayer Breakfast
Presented by the YMCA of Central Florida, the Southwest Orlando Jaycees and the Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission. The annual breakfast will feature Admiral David Brewer as the event speaker. There is a cost for this event.

Oviedo: Round Lake Park – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration & Parade
This year’s event theme is “We Are All One Humanity”. Starting at 10am, the parade will depart from Oviedo High School and travel along E. Broadway Street to Round Lake Park. There enjoy inflatables, live entertainment, vendors, and food trucks until 2pm.

Sanford: Fort Mellon Park – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festival
Join the celebration as the parade begins at 10am on Historical Goldsboro Boulvard. Followed by a festival in Fort Mellon Park from Noon – 4pm.

Winter Garden: Plant St Downtown – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration
Parade will start at 10 am and travel along Plant Street through downtown Winter Garden. Enjoy live entertainment, speakers, vendors, kids’ activities, and more.

Winter Park: Rollins College – Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Vigil
Meet at Kathleen W. Rollins Hall for light refreshments, then walk across campus to honor MLK, ending at Tiedtke Concert Hall for a concert by The Adrian Dunn Singers.
