On Sunday night, I found myself at the CFE Arena about to watch singer/actress Hailee Steinfeld take the stage to perform.

I’ll be honest…the only singing I really knew her from was her role in Pitch Perfect 2, where she played a new member of the Barden Bellas. She’s released a few singles since, but other than catching a couple on YouTube, I wasn’t that familiar with her musical side.

Listening to Steinfeld in her seven song set, I have to say she has a strong voice, and seemed very comfortable on stage. About half the songs featured back-up dancers, and Steinfeld worked with them well, though her dance moves weren’t very complicated. Understandable since she was singing.

For me, she really shone on songs like “Flashlight” and the set closer “Love Myself.” She also worked in a cover of Justin Bieber’s hit “Love Yourself,” which the mostly teen crowd went wild for.

Her sound is definitely pop dance, but Steinfeld’s voice fits the songs well. Her stage presence was also strong, and she worked all sides of the stage during her set.

Hailee Steinfeld is currently opening for Meghan Trainor, but I’d be interested in seeing her eventually headline a tour. For more information on Steinfeld, check out our show preview.
