Out and About: Spooky Empire Goes Retro for Horror Fans

Spooky Empire Inc returned to their home at the Wyndham Orlando Resort on I-Drive over the weekend. Fans of Spooky Empire wanted to return to the Wyndham and they listened, with an appropriately themed Retro weekend.

Spooky Empire Retro - slashers

This Spring show is an appetizer to the entrée that is their Fall show in October. As usual Spooky did not disappoint with their array of vendors, celebrities, tattoo alley, and costume contest.

Having attended this convention for eight years now I can say it has grown immensely and they always try to top the last show. Having been a retro themed weekend I saw many attendees wearing their shirts from past shows to demonstrate their love for the Spooky. The cosplayers were also bringing it back with their own homages of their favorite films.

Even though it is a horror convention Spooky Empire always offers something for everyone. Rock stars Alice Cooper and Twiggy Ramirez were in attendance for the music fans, lovers of The Sopranos met Paul Sorvino and Drea De Mateo, and actors from the original Godzilla films.

My favorite part of the con were the reunions panels. There was a reunion for the cast of Weird Science and if you were lucky to be of any of the after parties you could have rubbed elbows with Anthony Michael Hall himself.

There was also A Nightmare on Elm Street Dream Warriors reunion panel with four members from the film. The actors of Dream Warriors panel shared their admiration of Robert England (Freddy Kruger) and their own personal experiences as actors during the 80’s.

The show ended on Sunday right after the costume contest. As always there was stiff competition. Many entries were homemade and full of creativity.

Spooky Empire’s Retro weekend felt exactly as it should have. It was a gathering of friends who came together to share their love for the days of old. I look forward to what Spooky Empire will bring us in October. There are two things we know: one, Hellraiser’s Doug Bradley will be in attendance and the other, it will be held at the Orange Convention Center for the first time.

See you ghouls and gals in October!
