Out and About: Whitesnake at Hard Rock Live Orlando on August 3

Whitesnake is a band most people associate with the late 80s/early 90s hard rock scene, but truth is the band is still touring and recording. They also still have a huge following of fans, as the Hard Rock Live Orlando was packed on August 3.

Their newest release is this year’s The Purple Album, and it is an homage to the band Deep Purple, which Whitesnake’s David Coverdale sang in during the 70s. The set-list was a mixture of songs from that album as well as classic Whitesnake hits.

Coverdale sang as well as he ever has, not missing any notes and singing with power. I was in the pit trying to take photos from an angle but he kept coming and standing over me. It was funny, but I did get some interesting photos.

I also got some great photos of guitarist Joel Hoekstra, whom I first met when he played with Night Ranger at Epcot several years ago. I’ve always loved his style and playing, and I love seeing a musician who truly loves what he does and is smiling.

Among the many hits Whitesnake performed were “Slide It In” and “Is It Love?” and they were assisted by the crowd which sang along to every word.

I managed to get one good photo of Reb Beach on guitars. For the first three songs he mainly stayed in the background under blue or red lights, but I finally got him in good lighting during my last song in the pit. This is the first time I’d seen Reb in person since Winger’s tour in 1990. His playing is still amazing.

Overall, it was a great concert full of energy from both the band and the audience. Two thumbs up for Whitesnake live in 2015!
