Crave Restaurant Closes Its Orlando Location Near Mall at Millenia

Crave Restaurant has posted to its Facebook page that its Orlando location, near the Mall at Millenia, has officially closed permanently.

Crave RestaurantIt opened a little over four years ago, in the location of the former Village Tavern, and billed itself as an American eatery that specialized in sushi, as well.

No reason was given for the closing, though speculation ranges from having a hard to get into location near the corner of Conroy Rd and Millenia Blvd. to just not having the sales to justify the overhead of keeping it open so close to the pricey mall.

At any rate, if you crave Crave, the next closest location is all the way down in Coral Gables. Sorry Cravers.

But it’s not just the beef kind. There are turkey, chicken, seafood, and even veggie versions for burger lovers to enjoy.

Meet Fashion Designer Andy Hilfiger at Macy’s Millenia Mall on October 27

If the last name of fashion designer Andy Hilfiger sounds familiar, it’s because his brother is well known designer Tommy Hilfiger. But that doesn’t mean Andy rests on his brother’s laurels.

After a decade of work at Tommy’s company, Andy branched out on his own, helping launch a company that specializes in branding and licensing celebrity names for fashion, like JLO by Jennifer Lopez.

He also serves as creative director for Andrew Charles, a rock’n’roll inspired line of fashion for men and women, which is launching this season with rocker Stephen Tyler as his muse and inspiration.

The line will be sold exclusively at Macy’s, and to introduce the line, Hilfiger will be at the Macy’s at Millenia Mall here in Orlando on October 27. The event starts at 6pm and not only can you meet the designer, but he’ll also be performing with his band, The Click Clack Boom.

I really like the collection, but unfortunately, like most designer collections, we plus-sized customers are left out. Sad, since not only is the line inspired by Tyler’s 70’s style, but it’s actually pretty affordable. Tops start around $40; jeans are slightly more. Also, if you buy any Andrew Charles clothing during the event, you’ll receive a pair of headphones as a gift, while supplies last.

And yes, that is yet another of Tyler’s daughters (Chelsea) in the ad with him.

The Mall at Millenia is located at 4200 Conroy Rd, just off I-4, near Universal Orlando.

Happy Hour at Crave Orlando

My roommate and I noticed the other day that there was another new restaurant, Crave, over by Millenia, so we decided to try out their happy hour for a cheap early dinner today. It’s right next to the TGIFridays on the corner of Conroy and Millenia.

We went in and were sat at a booth in the bar. We almost got derailed because it seems Mondays are also Burger & Malt night, where the restaurant has a special menu of burgers and malts/shakes available. The specialty menu even had “adult” malts with alcohol. But we decided to save it for a future visit.

Not knowing how big the food portions were on the happy hour menu, we decided to order three items. We tried the Mini-Burger ($3), the Loaded Waffle Fries ($4) and the Korean Chicken Nuggets ($4).

The burger came cooked to order, topped with bacon and cheese melting off the side of the burger onto the Ciabatta bread. It was served with a side of root vegetable chips that tasted like they had just come out of the fryer. We agreed this would be a good-sized portion for one person.

The waffle fries were good, but a bit greasy. They were topped with chunks of mostly lean bacon and melted cheddar cheese. They were OK, but nothing spectacular.

We both agreed the chicken was the best of the three appetizers. The chicken was cut into bite-sized pieces, coated with Tempura batter and deep-fried. Then they were coated in a red sweet/spicy Miso sauce and served atop a small pile of mixed greens. Not being a huge fan of Miso, I didn’t think I’d like it, but I found the sauce to be just the right blend of sweet and spicy. The portion was definitely enough for a meal, but a small bit of white rice on the side would definitely kick this dish up a notch.

We both topped off the Happy Hour meal with a $3 Leinie Sunset Wheat on draft. Being from Wisconsin, we both get excited when we see our fave indie brewery on tap somewhere. Total with tax and tip came to about $22, which is pretty good for two. I think next time we’ll skip the waffle fries.

The service was good here, too, and if you miss the 3-6pm happy hour, it starts back up again at 9pm. The atmosphere was upscale bistro, and I would imagine they get quite packed on weekend evenings.

Free Tutti Frutti Yogurt on September 6

A few days ago I tried out the new Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt place by Mall at Millenia.

If you’d like to give this new eatery a try, head over there Monday (Sept. 6) afternoon. From 1pm to 2pm, all yogurt concoctions up to 6oz are free.

Since this weekend is the Labor Day holiday, I expect that there will be a line for the free stuff, but it’d make a nice treat for the family.

Tutti Frutti Yogurt is located at 4104 Millenia Blvd, on the backside of the mall building at the corner of Millenia and Conroy.

Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt By the Ounce

Driving around the Mall at Millenia this week, I spied a new business in the outer set of buildings at the corner of Conroy and Millenia.

Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt had its grand opening last month on August 14 and is pretty much a self-serve type of place.

You go in and pick your flavor from what’s available that day. TFFY rotates the flavors on a daily basis and they do allow you to sample them before you buy.

Today’s flavors were Almond, Coconut, Blueberry, Cheesecake, Vanilla, Death by Chocolate, Original tart, Mango, and Heath Bar.

Once you decide on a flavor, you pour it out into the cup. There are two flavors per machine and you can choose to have those two flavors swirled together.

Then you pick what toppings you want from the counter. There are pump bottles of chocolate, caramel and other liquid toppings. A tower holds the candy toppings and counter bar holds the perishable toppings like fresh fruit and whipped cream. You can put as much of whatever you like on your yogurt.

Just don’t get too carried away with piling on the toppings, though. TFFY charges by the ounce, so the more you put on, the heavier your cup of yogurt.

All concoctions cost 46 cents an ounce.

I blended almond and Heath Bar yogurt and topped it with kiwi fruit, granola and Ghirardelli caramel. Total for my creation was a little over $3 after tax.

The yogurt was the texture of soft serve ice cream and had a sweet taste to it. I liked the unusual flavor choices, too. I would say Tutti Frutti Yogurt would be a good substitute for an ice cream craving.

One other thing I noticed is that they also carry yogurt treats for dogs. They’re in a little freezer by the door and these pre-packaged treats come in doggy-approved flavors like banana and peanut butter. A single serving cup is under $3.

Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt is located at 4104 Millenia Blvd and they’re open 11am to 10pm every day except for Friday and Saturday when they’re open until 11pm.
