With a flourish of flames, Skull Island: Reign of Kong was officially opened at Islands of Adventure at Universal Orlando.
Members of the 8th Wonder Expedition Company took to the stage to theatrically announce the attraction was now open to all to experience.
A few weeks ago, Universal Orlando revealed story details for the upcoming Skull Island: Reign of Kong attraction, and yesterday, they released the first photo of the actual ride vehicle, along with a few more details.
The 40-foot-long, 17-ton expedition vehicle will use a sophisticated positioning system to independently navigate a rough, jungle road through unpredictable terrain. The extra-large vehicle will hold up to 72 passengers in twelve rows, which should help with passenger flow through the attraction.

Nestled between Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls and the Jurassic Park River Adventure at Islands of Adventure, the attraction has a Summer 2016 projected opening.

As we predicted this morning, Universal Orlando has formally announced a new King Kong attraction will be coming to Islands of Adventure.
Skull Island: Reign of Kong is the name, and it is an all new adventure that tells the next evolution in the Kong legend, with help from director Peter Jackson. He directed 2005’s King Kong, as well as the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit movies, so he understands sets of a large scale.
It’s been rumored for several months, but it was confirmed Tuesday that a new King Kong attraction will be opening at Universal Orlando in the near future.
In a call to discuss fourth-quarter earnings, Comcast, which owns Universal Orlando, said, “we continue to invest in attractions including Harry Potter and the Fast and Furious attractions in Hollywood and a King Kong attraction in Orlando….”
