After using their Heathrow location as a testing ground, the Stonewood Grill and Tavern has unveiled a new menu for the fall.

I personally haven’t eaten there yet, but every time I drive by the location near the intersection of Dr. Phillips Blvd. and Conroy Rd, the parking lot is always packed.  This is the sign of a good place to eat.

Among the items the popular restaurant says they’ve added are a rib eye steak and a Florida Orange cake, a three-layer cake reminiscent of a Dreamsicle frozen dessert.

The Florida-based chain was founded in 1999 and offers a variety of hand-cut steaks and market-fresh seafood cooked over an oak-burning grill.

There are 16 locations in the state, and one that’s escaped to Cary, NC.

For more info on the restaurant and its new menu, visit the Stonewood Grill website.

While at the site, sign up for their free Stonewood Club, which offers recipes, and the occasional coupon.

Yesterday,  Rhonda (my roommate) and I decided to check out Whole Foods’ 30th Anniversary celebration.  We arrived at the Dr. Phillips store (corner of Turkey Lake and Sand Lake Rds) around 1pm, and the first vendor sampling table was set up right by the door.

We sampled just about everything. Chocolate-covered Goji Berries, honey melons, cantaloupes, organic orange juice from a company in Clermont, fresh peach sorbet (that VitaMix guy was a hardcore salesperson),  cheeses, protein drinks,  wine and microbrews.  Most everything was delicious – nothing was truly horrible, but a few things didn’t really excite me.

Just when we thought we couldn’t sample any more food, they announced they were starting their store-wide chili cook-off.  They had me at chili.  So we did one more lap around the store, tasting every single chili entrant.

Rhonda’s favorite was a sweet-spicy version that used NY strip steak, mangos, red pepper flakes and agave nectar. I liked that one, but it was a bit too sweet. There was a vegetarian one that was nice and spicy, but it had a weird texture to it. My overall favorite was a white chicken chili. It was almost like a cream of chicken soup with beans, but it had a great flavor and texture. It was the only chili that I ate the whole sample.

It was a fun way to spend an hour or so, and I also liked checking out products without wasting money on something I may not like.

If you missed the Dr. Phillips store celebration, the anniversary party continues at the Winter Park store today from 1pm to 5pm.

Was driving through the parking lot at the Marketplace at Dr. Phillips (corner of Dr. Phillips and Sand Lake Rd.) earlier this week when I spied this sign:

I went online to the World of Beer website and there’s no date set for its opening. It just says “Fall 2010″ on the site. Looking inside, it seems as though there’s quite a bit of construction yet to happen.

According to the Facebook page, the store will carry over 500 beers. My kind of store!  I’ll definitely be there to check it out when it opens.

Pinkberry frozen yogurt has been a west coast favorite for years and has a high profile in the tabloids due to all its celebrity fans. But it’s slowly been branching out across the country and this week, opened its first Florida location here in the Orlando area.

Thursday (Aug 19), the store hosted a “Pinkberry Preview Party” where hundreds lined up for a free sample and a chance to spin the prize wheel. I drove by, but not being one to stand in long lines, I decided to come back the next day to try it out.

My friend and I arrived around 2:30pm to a mostly empty store. By the time we sat down, the line at the counter went out the door and wound around the corner to the Starbucks. Talk about great timing!

Pinkberry premium frozen yogurt is made with real nonfat yogurt and nonfat milk that is rBST hormone free. The person who waited on us was kind enough to let us sample all six flavors of Pinkberry: Original, a tangy sweet yogurt; Coconut, which tasted like frozen coconut milk; Pomegranate, made with 100% California-grown pure pomegranate juice; Mango, made with mango puree; Chocolate, which was rich tasting; and Passionfruit, a seasonal flavor. All were really good, and I liked that Pinkberry’s yogurt has a tartness to it. I hate when frozen yogurt is so sweet I feel like I’ve just eaten a ton of sugar.

Another thing I liked about Pinkberry is that in addition to candy and cookie-like toppings, you could choose to have more nutritious options like fresh fruit. There is an additional charge to have toppings, but it’s unlimited for one price, instead of a surcharge for each item.

Speaking of prices, Pinkberry’s yogurt comes in four sizes – mini, small, medium and large – and starts at $1.95 for a mini Original with no toppings and goes up to $7.95 for a large flavored with toppings.

I had a small Pomegranate Pinkberry with kiwi fruit, blackberries, honey almond  granola and a drizzle of honey ($4.95). The combination of the tart pomegranate with the thick honey offset each other just right. The fruit and granola gave the yogurt a nice texture and flavor, too. I’d give it a 10 out of 10.

My friend had the Chocolate Pinkberry with Mochi (a Japanese rice cake that tastes like a gourmet marshmallow), mixed nuts, yogurt chips and crushed waffle cone bits ($4.95). From the speed in which she ate it, I’d say she’d give hers a 10 out of 10, too.

Besides the great taste and flexibility with toppings, I also have to give thumbs up to the service.

There were two things I didn’t like, though. The music was so loud and bass-heavy, I felt like I should be in a club, not a food shop. Combine that with everybody trying to talk over the music and it was just one big wall of noise. If it wasn’t so hot outside, I would’ve moved to one of the patio tables to get away from the loudness.

Secondly, while there were only five tables inside, there were no trash cans. Outside there were several, but inside, none.

But those things aside, the frozen yogurt is definitely worth the trip.

Pinkberry is in The Marketplace at Dr. Phillips (7600 Dr. Phillips Blvd.), on the corner of Dr. Phillips Boulevard and Sand Lake Road. They can be reached by phone at 407-354-0890.

With the current heatwave in Orlando, wouldn’t a frozen yogurt be tasty? Then you’ll want to head over to Dr. Phillips to check out the grand opening of Pinkberry.

A popular west coast chain, Pinkberry has made its way to the east coast with its first Florida location.

Pinkberry’s serves up several flavors, including Original, Pomegranate, Coconut, Chocolate and Mango. Watermelon is a current seasonal flavor. Once you pick a flavor, decide if you want it in a cup or cone, with wet or dry toppings. Or be truly adventurous and order a parfait make with Pinkberry yogurt, fresh fruit and granola.

A “Pinkberry Preview Party” will be held Thursday, Aug. 19, 6- 10 pm. The party is open to the public and will feature free Pinkberry frozen yogurt and toppings, as well as music, prizes, games and more. The grand opening will be Friday, August 20, at 11am.

The first 100 fans in line for the Thursday event and Friday grand opening will also receive Pinkberry t-shirts.

Local fans who want up-to-the minute news and discount offers should sign up to be a Pinkberry Groupie. The company can also be found on Facebook and at Twitter @pinkberryswirl.
